Healthcare Education for Youth

Mary Wiseman

I have one sister Sarah, a dog Sailor and my mom Susan.  My whole family is very important to me including my grandparents Pat and Fred, cousins, Trish and Kelly and Aunt Marybeth.  My sister is really cool but she’s always in my hair.  Sailor, my dog is quiet but the sweetest dog you will ever meet.  My mom is so smart.  She is always doing something.  I hope I can be like her someday.  My grandparents, cousins and aunt are all a big inspiration.

I attend Einstein Middle School and my grades are A’s and B’s.  My favorite subjects are Math, Science, English and History.  Math has always been one of my favorites because I love to work with numbers.  Science is really cool because you get to make new things, learn about really big things like the solar system and really small things like an atom.  I also enjoy English because there is no limit in what you can read or write.  History is my new favorite because I like learning about the history of the United States.  My least favorite subject has to be Health because I already know too much about it.

I have a wide variety of hobbies, some of them include sewing, skiing, biking, cooking, gardening, seeing movies, and spend as much time is the water as I can.  In what free time I have I like to spend time with my family and hanging with friends.  I play the cello, which is a really big violin.  I am involved in volleyball, basketball, swimming, and soccer.  At my school I am in Student Council, Ski Club, and Pep club.  I would like to do a lot more things but there are only so many hours in a day.

My health condition is OK.  I was diagnosed in 2nd grade when I was 8 years old.  Immediately others saw me differently but now most of my friends I met when I went to middle school don’t even know I have a disease.

I have a Pediatric Rheumatology / Immunology Doctor and Nurse, Pediatric Nephrology Doctor and Nurses, Glaucoma Specialist, Dermatologist, Family Doctor and Orthodontist and my dog has his own doctor too.  Doctor Anna Huttenlocher and Joni Dean are the coolest people.  They have been with me since I was 8 years old.

Currently, there is no cure for my disease.  Some research that is going on and that would really help Lupus is the Stem Cell Research.

My life is affected by my disease because I have to miss school for different doctors’ appointments and anytime I get sick it is normally a 2 or 3-day thing.  I take special medicine but not anything that is just made for me.  Sometimes I can’t play a sport or write something but that has never ever stopped me from doing it anyway.

Some of my accomplishments are scoring the winning point in volleyball, or making 2 or 3 baskets in a basketball game.  I also am very proud of myself when I get an A on a big test or am told well done by a teacher.

I would really like to be on honor roll all through high school and get into UW Madison.  After that I would really like to become a veterinarian or a surgeon.  When I graduate I would even like to live on the East Coast or the West coast and work somewhere with lots of people.

If there is anyone out there who is really struggling I’d like you to know that you should never give up and don’t let yourself not believe in hope.  Please keep going and let yourself know everyday that you are not different in a bad way but you are just unique in your own way.  And being different is a very cool thing.
